Family Diversity
Against nuclear families
Leach (1967):
Nuclear family is too isolated, lacking support from the extended family
Places too much pressure on the parents
Takes their anger/frustration out on each other and their children
Laing (1964):
Nuclear family causes anxiety, depression and stress
Adults and children spend too much time together
Parents expect too much lead them to suffocate the children
Blamed a girl's schizophrenia on her parents
Cooper (1972):
Takes a Marxist slant - parents are the bosses and children the workers
Parents teach children to obey
Criticisms:
Too negative, many happy
Too critical of relationships, many still have family support
